1   Parkinsons’s disease (PD) is the second most common neuro-degenerative condition after Alzheimers disease, affecting approximately 1~2% of the people over 65 years old. According to statistics, more than 30,000 people have Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, the incidence rate of Parkinson’s disease appears to increase with age. In recent years, the demand for the care of the Parkinson’s disease patients in the society remained high (there were approximately 2,600 patients making 22,000 clinic visits for medical treatments in 2005). The training on Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders in and out of the hospital is required over the long term. Moreover, research on Parkinson’s disease has developed into several highly sophisticated and specialized fields in these years. Now, outpatient services for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders are available in the National Taiwan University Hospital. The Centre for Parkinson and Movement Disorders will be established in the Department of Neurology of the National Taiwan University Hospital in December, 2007. The center will provide more extensive medical care for the Parkinson’s disease patients and their family members by integrating the resources of different departments and emphasizing the medical services for the patients.
